"Oils well that ends well, I always say!
GM, you are absolutely right; oil is the energy for the 21st. century, because it is already made for us - it just has to be processed a bit. Alcohol requires growing and distilling, hydrogen uses more energy than it consumes, etc. Only oil comes with the energy already in it. You can't argue with basic chemistry.
And actual drilling may take a few years to get into gear, but it will present investors with a future drop in prices - meaning they will stop hoarding oil stocks. It is no coincidence that the price of gasoline dropped immediately when George W. Bush recinded his father's ban on offshore drilling; the potential for an expansion of oil supplies was enough to drop the market.
What Obama is trying to do is get a temporary drop in the market without actually opening any new reserves so he can get his alternative energy. He has admitted as much when he was running for the Presidency when he said he thought high oil prices were a good idea but that he wished they had risen more slowly. I guarantee you, he will only open unproductive oil fields as part of his plan; can't have real new supply coming in, or the green dream (nee nightmare) will fail."
End comment.
And that is exactly right; this is a "follow the pea" game designed to cheat the hapless mark (in this case, the U.S. citizen). Obama has no intention of increasing the U.S. oil supply, because he thinks we use too much energy now and wants us to drastically cut our energy usage. Liberals understand that the hallmark of wealth is energy usage, and America uses far more than most other nations. They cannot stand that disparity. The solution is, of course, to force America to use less, rather than increase usage for others. It's all part of their desire to chop this country down to size.
And don't forget Global Warming. While some libs have talked themselves into believing in it (and I wouldn't be surprised if BHO isn't one such) those who do not still know a good thing when they see it - and that buttresses their internal arguments.
Obama would no more allow productive drilling than he would allow privatizing social security.
But he's in political trouble, and a temporary drop would serve him well. He and his people think the public can be fooled this easily, and he's right about a number of people (mostly his base). But this will not last, and as soon as the election is over the ONE will move to drive prices up yet again. There is a reason why he keeps pushing rail systems.
