The Thrill of Defeat and the Agony of Victory
My brother Brian reluctantly wades into the culture wars; he was queried by someone at ConservativeBookClub.com about Dinesh D`Souza`s new book (which AT contributor Jack Kemp kindly compared to my latest piece), and had this to say:
Dear Elizabeth,
In answer to your kind invitation to respond to the "fight" among your board members, I'll throw in my two cents worth! I haven't read "The Enemy At Home" yet, although I plan to do so sometime soon. I am a Historian/College Professor and have a number of tedious volumes I am required to tackle as soon as possible so D'Souza will have to wait! I cannot comment on the book in question but I am not the least bit surprised that the American Left is rooting for a U. S. defeat. They hope we fail in Iraq, they want us to fail and the diminishing number of liberals who believe in God are praying for us to fail in Iraq. You are correct when you say that they welcome Islamic victory because this would mean a defeat for George W. Bush. I believe, however, that there is something more sinister afoot here.
The American Left has consistently aligned itself with the enemies of the USA since the First World War. The Popular Front Against Fascism was a Soviet backed anti-American movement which the Left wing strongly supported. They rallied to the colors during World War II but immediately after the war the American Left showed their true colors by attacking their own country and putting their faith in "Uncle Joe" Stalin. When Stalinism proved to be a disappointment the liberals saw Mao and the Red Chinese as the reformist hope. We were told that the Chinese Communists were agrarian reformers of the Jeffersonian persuasion and are still told today that Chinese hostility toward America is the residual result of American imperialism. The Left then began to have second thoughts about Maoism after the Cultural Revolution and shifted their allegiance to Castro in Cuba and ultimately to the Viet Cong during the war. The common denominator here is that they always aligned themselves with the enemies of the United States.
When the world moved forward into the 1970s and 80s the left did not really change. They toppled the Shah of Iran and paved the way for the looming catastrophe. The Left ignored the Southeast Asian holocaust they perpetrated and put their renewed faith to work by supporting the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. When the Soviet leaders began dying in rapid succession during the early 1980s the Left earnestly announced that the NEW Soviet leader (whoever he turned out to be) would be the charismatic figure who would revitalize Communism, would show that it was a humane and workable system, and would beat Reagan at his own game. Don't we all remember the Left Wing's giddiness over Mikhail Gorbachev?
The Left appeared sullen and downtrodden after the American victory in the Cold War, the liberals who bothered to make note of this stunning development began rewriting history with the intention of trying to claim credit. Now, we face a foe nearly as dangerous and more relentless than the Soviet Union. The American Left, always aligned with the enemies of the USA, think they have found their new standardbearer. Certainly, the Left approaches the Islamist menace gingerly, people known for decapitating those who displease them are not all jolly good fellows! The American Left does, however, have an immeditae affinity for an enemy of the USA and the Islamic terrorists will do just fine for now.
D'Souza's other main point that the modern liberal debasement of popular culture has contributed to Muslim hatred of the USA is a little more problematic. I doubt whether any conservative could (or would) argue that our popular culture is anything other than a cesspool and that the displays of social pathologies such as rampant promiscuity, infidelity, homosexual coupling and other sewage passed off as standard operating procedure in America is probably offensive to traditionalist societies. I spent five years working as a contractor with the U.S. Navy and spent a lot of time in the Middle East, however, and I watched the way the wealthy sheiks carried on in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates and I must say that we need no moral lessons from them and I will challenge anyone who claims that Islam hates us for our decadence.
They hate us for our wealth. They hate us for our power. They hate us for our Christianity. The American Left apologizes for our wealth. The American Left cringes at our power. The American Left denies our Christianity. Now does it make sense why the American Left has been so reluctant to wage the war on terror?

Brian,
Excellent argument. A good historical context of the the illiberal liberals.
