The Third Eye is on You
The crazy Russians at Pravda have a ridiculous New Age piece discussing the Ajna Eye, an oriental concept that humans have a third ``psychic`` eye which gives them extraordinary spiritual powers. They point out that mammals have an atrophied third eye, which they assume means that these ancient superstitions are correct. I could have explain it to them, if they would have bothered to ask me. In fact, I think I`ll explain it now.
Reptiles are, as we all know, cold blooded creatures. Their body temperatures are dependent on the outside temperature, which means that their periods of activity are regulated by variations of heat and cold. Warmth generally causes a reptile to become more active, so they tend to be more active during the day. At night, when temperatures cool, reptiles generally become torpid, and often sleep. That is the reason why they tend to crawl on their bellies; they try to keep as much of their surface area in contact with the ground as possible to absorb heat.
Mammals, on the other hand, have self-regulating internal body heat. As a result, they require sophisticated mechanisms to regulate their diurnal rhythms. The earliest mammals had much cruder neural sensors, and so God provided them with a third eye directly on top of their heads. This eye connected with the (now somewhat atrophied) pineal gland. The pineal gland produces melatonin, which regulates the sleep-cycle, among other things. It`s pretty obvious the function of the third eye-it told the early mammals when to go to bed! (It probably also helped to keep their body temperatures stable.)
Russia has become a land filled with occultism and superstition. Flying saucers,Yeti, necromancy, sexual witchcraft have all become commonplace there. That massive superstition and New Age beliefs have become widespread in Russian should come as no surprise. Nature abhorrs a vacuum, and Russia has become a world-girdling spiritual black hole. Once people stop believing in God, they will believe in anything!
Think what the KGB would have given to have had their agents with functional third eyes!

Fascinating article, Tim, I really had no idea about the existence or the function of the mammalian third eye. You are right in so many ways, about how when it comes to belief in man, nature abhors a vaccuum. As a matter of fact, when they did studies to determine whether there was a part of the brain which was responsible for near death experiences they did find an area which when stimulated seemed to give rise to religious-type experiences. Now -- those who would argue that religious beliefs are simply artifacts of a few brain cells might want to think again. It seems that God (or nature -- same thing) has implanted in the human brain a "religion center" -- one which seeks God -- or seeks that ecstatic or religious feeling or experience. And it is true that occultism, spiritualism, ufology, etc. etc. all are substitutes for this innate instinctual need of man. You don't have to look much further than Hollywood, which is filled with all sorts of harebrained mystical practices which fill the stars empty lives with some semblance of meaning. Similarly, the godless philosophies of Marx have substituted a religious type fervor and worship of the ideology and the leader for religion. Witness the personality cults surrounding Mao, Stalin, Lenin, etc. -- even extending to the bizarre life-beyond-death phenomenon of the embalmed bodies of Lenin in the mausoleum. Like the Pharoahs of old, they wanted to survive death -- even their godless "religion" tried to conquer death.
Similarly in Russia, and other former Soviet states, all sorts of beliefs are rushing in to fill that vaccuum left when Stalinism died. Even Stalinism is making a comeback - because as you said - and also G. K. Chesterton said something similar -- man is created to believe in something.
Fabulous topic -- one could talk about the ramifications and possibilities of these ideas for a long time.
