The Weiner Watch Continues

Jack Kemp

"I'll be back tomorrow at 6:30 in the morning."

I'm listening to the New York Times reporter (I saw his official press pass around his neck) talking to the assembled reporters with their folding chairs in front of Anthony Weiner's apartment house. Tomorrow would make it at least six days straight of reporters and camera people (mostly men) hanging out in front of Weiner's abode with representatives of major news organizations: ABC, CNN, The New York Daily News, The New York Post, New York 1 Cable TV. The CNN truck is gone, but it has been replaced by an ABC and a CBS truck.

A rumor floated through the crowd that Weiner is moving out of the building. It's news - and quite believable. It was also reported on the internet this afternoon that Mrs. Weiner is pregnant.

"They ought to charge a cover and a two drink minimum," I say to the other reporters. 1 Ascan Avenue has become great neighborhood social hangout. Besides meeting journalists, today I met an independent music producer and some neighborhood senior women and some local young women who were creeped out by...the creep (Weiner). I honestly haven't found a better local place to hang out and have good conversation like this in years.

"This is a lot better than asking people who had their loved ones shot to death how they feel," said a lady reporter from the New York Daily News. Most of the reporters had to put in overtime until 8:30 or 9 pm this Wednesday night. As of 8:20 pm, Weiner didn't come home. That is, if he can still call this place his home.

New York State lost two Congressional seats in this last Census, and Weiner's district will probably disappear in one of the fastest moving bi-partisan acts in New York State history. The question now is: how long can Weiner hold on to his lame duck position?

This Sunday, there will be a street fair on nearby Austin Street. A neighbor told the assembled reporters, eating their pizza from the nearby Portofino Restaurant, that in the past Weiner used to come to the fair and walk down the middle of the street with two or three advance people shouting out that Congressman Anthony Weiner was there. He moved through the crowd like an emperor. But I don't think he will chance it this Sunday because this time - the Emperor truly has no clothes.
