Christmas mass streaker faces community service
An 18-year-old Alice Springs man who streaked through a Christmas Eve mass will have to serve 200 hours of community service.
Shaun Edward Mackley pleaded guilty in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court to disturbing religious worship at the town's Catholic church.
Mackley admitted entering the church naked, running up the aisle and jumping onto the alter and exposing his genitals to the congregation of 250 people.
Mackley's counsel Russell Goldflam told the court that the offence had started as a drunken, spontaneous prank and ended with serious consequences.
Mr Goldflam said his client wished to repay the town for his offence by performing community service.
Magistrate Michael Carey told Mackley he was lucky not to be going to jail for such an offence.
Mr Carey sentenced Mackley to 200 hours of community service and strongly recommended to the Corrections Department that those hours be served in or around the Catholic church
