The Republican Jewish Coalition will host a candidate forum on Wednesday. N.J. Gov. Chris Christie will give the keynote speech and all of the major contenders are reportedly confirmed to attend, but one: Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas.
“Ron would be happy to speak to their group, but he was not invited,” spokesman Jesse Benton told Capital Hill, via email. “We called to ask if he could speak, and they said he was not welcome.”
The snub is not that surprising. The coalition has criticized Paul in the past for his position on Israel. The libertarian-minded Paul is a critic of foreign aid generally and has long criticized U.S. support for Israel.
In a candidate forum last month Paul said, “I think they’re quite capable of taking care of themselves,” in response to a question on whether the candidates would back Israel should it attack Iran.
RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks confirmed the snub to CBS: “He’s just so far outside of the mainstream of the Republican party and this organization.”
