The Age of Irony

Timothy Birdnow

Some things are truly amazing. One such appeared in Terra Daily; an article entitled "Tropical Cyclones to Cause Greater Damage" http://www.terradaily.com/reports/Tropical_Cyclones_to_Cause_Greater_Damage_999.html appears just below articles entitled "Death toll from Europe cold snap passes 300", "Misery as Italy cold snap death toll rises to 17" and "Deadly cold front continues as dam bursts in Bulgaria"

Why is this amazing? Because the upshot of the Cyclone story is that (drumroll please) Global Warming is going to cause more cyclonic activity. Yes, as the world shivers in the cold we are treated to warnings about Global Warming. According to the article:

"Tropical cyclones will cause $109 billion in damages by 2100, according to Yale and MIT researchers in a paper published in Nature Climate Change. That figure represents an increased vulnerability from population and especially economic growth, as well as the effects of climate change.

Greater vulnerability to cyclones is expected to increase global tropical damage to $56 billion by 2100-double the current damage-from the current rate of $26 billion per year if the present climate remains stable.

Climate change is predicted to add another $53 billion of damages. The damage caused by climate change is equal to 0.01 percent of GDP in 2100."

End excerpt.

Apparently the editors at Terra Daily were completely unaware of the irony.
