Military to Sanitize Training - Again!

Timothy Birdnow

They're doing it again!  The military - at the direction, no doubt, of the Commander-in-Chief - is trying to sanitize training material to make it more Islamic friendly, removing references to radical Islam.

According to the Wired article:

"The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Tuesday ordered the entire U.S. military to scour its training material to ensure it doesn’t contain anti-Islamic content, Danger Room has learned. The order came after the Pentagon suspended a course for senior officers that was found to contain derogatory material about Islam.

The extraordinary order by General Martin Dempsey, the highest-ranking military officer in the U.S. armed forces, was prompted by content in a course titled “Perspectives on Islam and Islamic Radicalism” that was presented as an elective at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia. The course instructed captains, commanders, lieutenant colonels and colonels from across all four armed services that “Islam had already declared war on the West,” said Lt. Gen. George Flynn, Dempsey’s deputy for training and education.

“It was inflammatory,” Flynn told Danger Room on Tuesday. “We said, ‘Wait a second, that’s really not what we’re talking about.’ That is not how we view this problem or the challenges we have in the world today.”

The strong response by the Pentagon brass illustrates growing sensitivity around the issue since Danger Room’s investigation of anti-Islam material in the FBI’s counterterrorism training last September. That story sparked strong condemnation of the training material from the U.S. Attorney General on down, and prompted the White House to order a review of U.S. counterterrorism training last October"

Several points to ponder.

First, if we go to war, shouldn't we be inflammed at the enemy? Isn't that the general idea; you don't go to war with your friends or those who have not wronged you. And if you go to war you may not want to hate your enemy (it clouds your judgement) but you certainly want a modicum of animosity against them. How do you fight with any enthusiasm or sense of purpose if you don't think of the enemy as a collection of bastards? Passionless warfare is worse than passionless lovemaking; a boring tryst ends in disappointment, but a boring war ends with a lot of extra dead people. The best strategy for warfare is to get it over with, fight it hard and win it. A passionless war drags on and on, with no sense of purpose and no end in sight. It is madness to worry about inflaming passions; our people should be passionate.

And we have every right to believe in the moral superiority of our cause. We were the ones attacked, after all. If we didn't think ourselves morally superior to the enemy we would have no great reason to fight. How do you encourage an army without such a sense of purpose? It used to be done with plunder and booty (and female booty, too!) but the professional army doesn't work that way. There is little enough pride in King and Country, and most American soldiers enlist solely to protect their family and friends, and perhaps to find work. Without a sense of moral outrage against the enemy we have nothing.

But, you may say, we are at war with Terror and specifically Al Qaeda. First, we never said we were at war strictly with Al Qaeda. George W. Bush said we were at war with terrorism, it is true, and especially terrorists who have global reach, but who are these terrorists? If we refuse to define them we may as well be at war with Santa clause. It is the RADICAL ISLAMISTS we are fighting, those promoting a new Caliphate to be built on the dead bones of Western Civilization. Any fool can see this is a clash of civilizations, one that the pluralistic West must win. WE are the ones who tolerate others, they are not. Could a Christian minority fight a worldwide  war to destabilize a dominant Islam and be tolerated? No. The Islamic world would crush every Christian everywhere. This ridiculous idea that Islamic fundamentalism is not the enemy stems from the politically correct nonsense from the 1980's, the stupid moral relativism. Who are we to judge others?  I'll tell you who we are; we are the good guys. The morally superior have every right to pass judgement on criminals, and Islamic radicals are criminals.

So, why is it necessary to sanitize this war? Remember, President Barack Obama was opposed to it from the beginning. Remember too, he has sympathies with Islam, saying he would stand with the Muslims if it came to their being "persecuted" as he adjudged it. The fact is, the Progressives believe in their heart of hearts that, at best, there is no difference between us and the radical Islamists, and, indeed, they are morally superior, being people of color who have been traditionally oppressed by white guys. That the Islamic world had slavery for captives who had the misfortune of being caught by pirates and whatnot, including an onerous sexual slavery for "infidel" women, and that even today such places as Sudan allow such slavery, is immaterial to their preconceptions. Islam isn't Christianity (which they hate) and the Islamic world isn't Western, making them de facto victims. How dare WE judge THEM!  To the Left we have absolutely no right.

The Administration knows this war cannot simply be ended, but it can be scrubbed away like so much soap scum. And the radical ends of so many in this Administration are advanced by the advancement of radical Islam; there is an ancient Arabic proverb "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and Islam is as much an enemy of the traditional West as is Liberalism. If the Islamists advance - with their hatred of women, of homosexuals, of everything the Left holds dear notwithstanding - then the Liberal sees his agenda advance, or so he thinks. The arrogance of the Left is on display here; much like the industrialists who backed Adolf Hitler, they think the Islamists will go away once the Progs have taken charge. They haven't read their history.

And so we endure another round of imbecility by the military in it's pursuit of a warfare that is more like playing Space Invaders.

Those who are not bold do not win wars, neither do the timid. Sun Tzu argued this very thing thousands of years ago, and it is still true today. We may have the tools, the training, the manpower, but without a sense of purpose this war is lost. And this war will not just go away; it is a defining moment.

I wonder what date future historians will use to denote the fall of the United States?
